A PUB quiz and raffle at the White Lion at Wilton, Ross on Wye, has raised over £230 for Cancer Research UK.
Regular White Lion quizzers and newcomers gathered on the pub’s patio and decking areas for the charity quiz.
There were some fiendishly difficult questions, but good-natured banter and laughter prevailed throughout.
The Ross Cancer Research shop is grateful to landlord Lee for his excellent quizmaster skills, and to all the pub staff for helping make it a truly wonderful evening.
Local businesses stepped up and contributed some very generous raffle prizes in the form of gift vouchers, including £40 from the White Lion, £25 from Ross Health and Beauty, £20 from Avellino Restaurant, £20 from Esca Restaurant, £20 from Pengethley Farm Shop, £10 from Truffles Delicatessen, and £10 from T’Licious Home-Cooked Food.
The £232 raised has all been donated to the Bowelbabe Fund, which was set up by the amazing Dame Deborah James and Cancer Research UK.
Deborah was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2016, aged just 35. She became an inspiring campaigner, hosting the award-winning “You, Me and the BIG C” podcast, and raising money for research.
After Deborah’s death at only 40, in 2022, Deborah’s family and the charity were determined to continue her legacy, to bring hope for a better future for people affected by cancer.
So far, the Bowelbabe campaign has raised over £17 million to fund cutting-edge research into early detection and personalised medicine, raise awareness of signs and symptoms and tackle the stigmas around cancer.
Cancer Research shops get involved in the campaign just for a month, every June. Last year, the 600 shops throughout the country raised nearly £420,000. That's nearly £700 per shop. This year the Ross shop raised over £850, thanks to generous customers, donors.
