Responses have been pouring into the Ross Gazette, regarding last week’s article on the issue of Archenfield Road’s speeding problem.

At the Ross Town Council meeting, Archenfield Road was brought up by Councillors as a matter of concern. Several of them have received complaints about near-incidents taking place on the road.

The concerns were raised to Police Community Support Officer, (PCSO) Paul Davies, who said that he will look into whether the road can be changed so that the speed limit can decrease more gradually, earlier on.

The issue was brought up initially by Ross Town and County Councillor, Richard Mayo, who said that they are “pushing Herefordshire Council” and are “hoping to get playground signs for the area, in case the people speeding do not know it is there.” He added: “It has been raised to the police, and it is up to them now.”

Another Ross Councillor, Phil Cutter, expressed his personal experience of Archenfield Road: “From walking my three grandkids to school, I agree that it can be very difficult crossing that road.”

Here is what the Ross Gazette readers think - Mandi Matthes - “I park in Archenfield Road (as I have no off road parking). In three years my car has been hit five times! Once the door needed completely replacing and twice the wing mirror has been knocked off. It’s gained a couple of dents too.”

Katharine Ricks Brennand: “Our garden borders on Archenfield road and it sounds like a race track. Also there are tractors driving like the clappers up and down all day.”

Gail Lucas: “Scary drive in the mornings.”

Caroline Davies: “It’s about time they put a crossing in too, since the lollypop lady finished you take your life in your hands crossing Archenfield Road, and also people that insist on parking almost to the junction is so dangerous! It’s a matter of time till there’s an accident there!”

Dai Harries said: “We have been campaigning for this for at least ten years and nothing came of the last speed survey that was carried out. Why not 20mph from the Prince of Wales?”

Lewis Scott: “Archenfield Road is a death trap. I’ve lived on and near it for 30 years. It should have a 20mph speed limit from The Prince to Roman Way.”

Several residents also mentioned other roads which they felt were a problem in Ross-on-Wye. These include Walford Road, Vaga Crescent and Alton Street.
