Suzy Starlite, who grew up in Ross, and still has family living in the town, has released a blues album, which she co-wrote with her husband, Simon Campbell, an award winning musician.
The album, Blueberry Pie, has been receiving rave reviews from across the world. It entered the IBBA British Blues Charts at number 12 and has not yet been officially released.
The album reflects the couples’ love of home, family and tradition and the album features a picture of Suzy’s beloved grandmother, Betty Higgs, which was taken in Ross. Suzy was trying out her new camera and her Nan was getting fed up. Suzy thinks she would be horrified to know that it has made the cover of an album.
Her Nan lived in Smallbrook Gardens and Suzy can remember visiting her every day before attending Ross Grammar School and again on her way home. Suzy said: “She was my best friend, I think she would be pleased to see what I have achieved.”
Suzy loves Ross and she told the Ross Gazette that in some ways she would like to have a more settled home. But, possibly because her parents died at a fairly young age, she feels she has to make the most of her life and to fulfil her early dreams. Suzy always wanted a career in music. She studied Media and Performance at Salford University in the 1990s and together with friends formed folk/rock band, Megiddo. The band were regulars on the UK Folk Circuit featuring at several festivals around the country, including Monmouth Music Festival.
Megiddo disbanded in 1997 and Suzy formed a new project band ‘Trade’ which later became ‘Starlite’.
Following a move to the Isle of Man in 2009 Suzy started working with musician and producer Simon Campbell. In 2014, Suzy moved to Valencia with her, now husband, Simon where they continued to write and record, they have a recording studio in Spain but are based in the UK. They perform together as the Starlite Campbell Band and also support other musicians.
Suzy told the Gazette that she gets back to Ross as often as possible and would love to play at a venue in the area. She said: “I wish the International Festival still took place, that would be the perfect place to perform in our home town.”
Blueberry Pie is filled with stories of loss, love, despair and most importantly, lots of hope, in the tradition of British Blues. The album is available to pre-order in both higher quality digital and physical formats from http://music.starlite-campbell.com or from iTunes.
