The 2017 Christmas meal for the elderly and members of the community that would be alone on Christmas Day was made possible once again by the Ross-on-Wye Lions Club and EnviroAbility. The day was great success for thoe who helped prepare 70 meals, including 12 home deliveries to those who were unable to make it to the Larruperz Centre.
Hot meals are sent out with willing volunteers, some of these being members or friends of the Ross Lions, who transport the meal to the individual’s house. On arrival they serve up the dinner along with a Christmas cracker, a present and a mini bottle of wine. When possible the volunteers like to stay and have a friendly chat as it is Christmas Day. President of Ross Lions, Jenny Symington said that she was very grateful to all of the organisations involved in making the day enjoyable and such a success.
Help came from many from among the community: Ross Phoenix Theatre Singers once again came up trumps with a fantastic collection from their annual concert; a special thank you to Ruth Gibbins who volunteered to cook the dinner this year; the Ross Action Bus and RVS for supplying the minibuses to transport people to and from the Larruperz, and Age Concern for their continued involvement. Again, the support from local businesses has also been appreciated with JP Produce donating all the vegetables and potatoes, Ross Garden Store donating potted plants as a gift for all the guests and a donation for the event from PGL.
Sam from EnviroAbility said: “Everyone who came found the event friendly, fun and welcoming, especially the volunteers who gave up their time to be a part of making the day so special for many. We all look forward to seeing you again this year.”
