A Town Councillor is continuing to lobby Balfour Beatty to repair a pothole on High Street in Ross-on-Wye, even though the company have said that they do not consider it to be a safety issue.
In July, the Gazette reported that Cllr Bartrum had been lobbying the County Council and Balfour Beatty to repair the pothole since October 2016. In July, he was finally told it was not deemed to be a hazard.
However, Cllr Bartrum disagrees with this, and so it seems, do several Ross residents. After the Gazette ran two stories, detailing the Town Councillor’s High Street pothole saga, several local people contacted him, to say they also thought that the pothole was dangerous.
One woman said:?“I have nearly gone flying when crossing the road at this spot and have only just stopped myself from falling completely. It aggravated my ankle at the time.
“I’m seeing a physiotherapist at the moment to try and strengthen my right ankle. I try to avoid this spot now when going into town.”
Another woman commented: “It is a significant hazard for pedestrians and I tripped twice last week in the same spot. I often park up by The Royal Hotel and then walk down to town. I must cross at the same spot without realising!
“The first time I thought I’d just misplaced my foot, and fell forward with a jolt. The second time, only two days later, when the same thing happened, I looked more closely and realised the deep pothole was the hazard!
“Again, I nearly fell in the road. Having examined the hole, I will now be more careful, but it really is a case of an accident waiting for any pedestrians crossing at that point.”
Cllr Bartrum passed these accounts on to Balfour Beatty, and said: “These statements provide you with evidence that this road defect represents a significant and continuing danger to pedestrians. I therefore request that you re-inspect the defect and classify it as needing to be remedied as soon as possible.”
