The Mayor of Ross-on-Wye, Councillor Harry Bramer, visited West Park nursing home in Ross on Christmas Eve and was delighted to meet a resident who had worked for four years in the munitions factory making explosives for the Second World War.

Louisa Jacobs, formerly of Tudorville, worked at the munitions factory in Rotherwas for four years during the war.

Councillor Bramer said that the young ladies of the day were extremely brave and witnessed many tragic events when accidents occurred.

The explosives with which they worked made their skin turn yellow and earned them the name ‘Canary Girls.’

The Mayor enjoyed talking about these events with Louisa, who is pictured right, holding her medal which has the legend ‘FRONT LINE DUTY’ on it.

Cllr Bramer told the Ross Gazette: “It was a great honour to meet so brave a lady – who even now in her later years has been honoured and recognised for her dedicated efforts during the war years.”
