A local woman has contacted the Ross Gazette, after receiving a letter from scammers, claiming they are writing from the International Fifa World Cup Online Lottery.

In the letter it states that the woman has won £900,000. This is the latest letter to a local resident that the Ross Gazette has been told about.

In November 2016, the Gazette reported that two local people had received letters from this fake lottery. Neither were fooled, but both wanted to let other people know that it was a scam, and not to respond to the letter. There was another incident in May 2016.

Action Fraud, the National Fraud and cyber crime reporting centre, have confirmed that the International Fifa World Cup Online Lottery is a scam.

Recipients are asked to contact a “claims agent” on a landline, mobile or fax number provided in order to begin the process of claiming the money.

If victims make contact with the fraudsters, they will be asked to part with money as an upfront payment, or forward money to enable them to enter the tender process for a prize that does not exist.

The letter also asks victims to inform their “claims agent” of any changes in personal information or address as soon as possible. This personal information will likely be used by fraudsters to commit identify fraud.

Always remember, if you haven’t entered a lottery then you can’t have won it. If you receive a letter, similar to the ones described, report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or www.actionfraud.police.uk
