THE Ross-on-Wye Sea Cadets is preparing to welcome the Lord-Lieutenant of Herefordshire later this month as the unit looks to recruit new volunteers to help meet growing demand from local young people.

The visit comes as the unit faces a waiting list of eight young people eager to join.

Volunteers are now being sought to help increase capacity, reduce pressure on existing instructors and create opportunities for more young people to take part.

Ross-on-Wye Sea Cadets currently provides adventure, leadership training and life-changing experiences for young people in the local area, but a shortage of adult volunteers means the unit is unable to expand as quickly as demand requires.

Commanding Officer Lt Ross Lloyd-Bennett of Ross Sea Cadets said: "We're delighted to be welcoming Edward Harley, the Lord-Lieutenant to the unit and showcasing the fantastic work our volunteers and cadets do every week.

"The challenge we face isn't a lack of young people wanting to join. We currently have a waiting list and would love to offer places to more local children and teenagers."

"To do that, we need more volunteers. You don't need a military or maritime background. If you can spare some time and want to make a difference to young people's lives, we'd love to hear from you."

The unit is particularly keen to hear from adults who can support weekly training, mentor young people and help deliver activities ranging from first aid and leadership to boating and adventure training.

Volunteers receive full training and ongoing support, with opportunities to develop new skills and gain qualifications.

Established on 17 May 1999, the unit has welcomed approximately 750 cadets over the past 27 years.
