Among the many visitors to Ross-on-Wye for this year’s Regatta week was Catherine Long, a competitor and member of the Staines Boat Club based on the River Thames.
However, Catherine’s day job is a Public Engagement Officer for the Imperial War Museums in London. While in Ross she met Gordon Amand who is one of a large band of Remote Volunteer workers in the UK who undertake research on local war memorials - an appropriate activity during this centenary period of World War One.
It is estimated that there are between 75,000 and 100,000 memorials in the UK, so there are a lot more still to record. Gordon was motivated to become a volunteer for the IWM after he had studied the fascinating history of the Chelsea Pensioners who were evacuated to Ross during World War Two.
