Two Ross-based Macmillan Youth Development Officers have been recognised for their inspirational work supporting people affected by cancer in the area.

Macmillan’s President, Lady Camilla Halifax presented SammyJay Powell and Ness Holbrook with the award at the prestigious 2016 Macmillan Excellence Awards, held in Birmingham.

The awards, which are now in their fifth year, were developed to celebrate the outstanding work carried out by Macmillan health and social care professionals across the country.

SammyJay and Ness, were nominated for the Service Improvement Excellence category, which recognises those who’ve developed integrated services that have greatly improved the experiences of people affected by cancer.

Their award-winning work involves helping young people who have been referred to Hope by working out what types of support they might need. Some need one-to-one time with a support worker, while others prefer taking part in Hope’s vast range of group activities.

“When a young person is better able to cope with a family health crisis, they can better engage with their family, school and community,” said SammyJay.

She added:?“It’s empowering that Macmillan recognises the value of the service we provide – knowing that a young person is being supported at such a difficult time is so reassuring to the patient and rest of the family. Winning was all a bit overwhelming, but we are both really proud and excited!”

Ness commented: “It was really inspiring to meet so many Macmillan professionals at the ceremony. It’s amazing that the work Hope does has been recognised, and winning this award is such a great platform to reach more young people who need us – especially as our online service is available nationally.”
