The staff and pupils at St Joseph’s RC Primary School celebrated St David’s Day on Friday, March 1st. The whole school enjoyed a non-school uniform day, and many of the children dressed up in the red and green colours of the Welsh flag, and some even dressed up as dragons.
With the patron saint of Wales in mind, throughout the day, all of the children had the chance to take part in a range of themed activities in groups of mixed classes.
They learnt how to make and cook Welsh cakes, and for some of the children baking, it was the first time that they had tasted them.
They also played fun rugby games, which was particularly well-timed with Wales’ recent rugby victory against England.
Painting and drawing was also enjoyed when the children got stuck into painting their own Welsh flags and also learnt about the history behind the red dragon.
In the run up to St David’s Day, over the half term, everyone at the school was given the task of building their very own castle. The creations were amazing, with castles made of stone, clay, cardboard, and lego, while some decided to create a sewn castle or a computer version.
Many of the children were excited to talk about where their inspiration had come from; some of which were influenced by Cardiff Castle and Kidwelly Castle, for example.
The day concluded with a whole school assembly, where the children discussed why St David’s Day is celebrated and what it’s all about. It was also an opportunity for the children to show their castle creations to their friends in other classes. It was a tough decision for the teachers to decide which castle would be awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, and the winners were delighted to receive prizes for their efforts.
