Members of Ross Golf Club honoured their Champions and annual Trophy winners in fine style when the Club's Championship Finals Day and Prizegiving presentation took place on Saturday, September 17th.

The 36 holes final to decide the Club's 2011 Men's Champion featured two talented golfers who were both aiming to take the title for the first time. Big hitting Steve Wallbank, who plays off a four handicap, took on Jason Bolton, who is a six handicapper, so the pair were well matched.

In the opening morning round Steve gained the ascendancy with two birdies in the first nine holes. With two more birdies on the back nine, he was able to enjoy some lunch at the half-way mark with a three holes lead.

In the afternoon round, Steve continued to hit the ball consistently long and straight, and his short game and putting were in good shape as well. Jason, who also made three birdies in his round, was never able to put his opponent under sufficient pressure to influence the outcome.

Ultimately the result was decided at 29th hole when Steve secured his day's eighth birdie to become a worthy 2011 Club Champion with a convincing 8/7 victory.

Steve capped a memorable golfing year when he also won the Club's annual Yates Cup knock-out overcoming Colin Bennion 2/1 in the final.

There was also considerable excitement when a Club team, with Clarkson Barclay in charge, aimed to reach the final stages of the Gloucestershire Golf Union's County Seniors Foursomes Scratch Salver by beating some very experienced golfers from the Cotswold Hills Golf Club, Cheltenham.

Despite being on their home course, the omens were far from ideal when in the opening match, the Ross Pair, Godfrey Farr and Tim Rigden, found themselves two holes down with just four holes left to play.

However in a remarkable and unexpected turnaround Godfrey and Tim won the last four holes to get the better of two and three handicap opponents respectively. This produced a two up Ross win.

When Doug Duncanson and Brian Prosser reported on another Ross success with a 2/1 win in the second match, this meant the team's winning objective was achieved, despite the 2/1 loss in the final match featuring Gwynne Morgan and Colin Bennion. The two points to one Ross win will see the Club going to Minchinhampton in October to contest the four teams final.
