Ladies' Day, a light-hearted comedy by Amanda Whittington, opens this Saturday at the Phoenix Theatre in Ross. The play was originally written for John Godber's Hull Truck Theatre Company, which has been renowned for producing sparkling witty plays with a core of Northern humour.

Many theatre-goers will be familiar with his work, including Up 'n' Under, Teechers and Bouncers. The play, set in 2005, follows four women, all fish packers in Hessle near Hull, as they escape from their mundane lives to a glamorous day out at York racecourse. As the play develops, we learn the secrets of each of the central characters, and find out what really brings them to the race.
