It is a Phoenix Theatre tradition to dedicate a day in Autumn to support Children in Need. This year the day’s activities have raised over £1,100 – a record amount.

During the day, members of the Phoenix Theatre Singers hosted a ‘Performathon’, which gives anyone the chance to arrange a session on stage to sing, recite, dance, play an instrument or otherwise entertain. It’s great for aspiring youngsters to get a first taste of treading the boards, or for the more experienced to enjoy performing again.

The youngest this year was eight year old Amelia who sang a Disney song, and the oldest was probably a lady pianist who loved taking the opportunity to tickle the ivories. Supporters and the public in general are always welcome to come and listen and enjoy refreshments in return for a donation to the charity. It’s a fun way for everyone to help Children in Need.

The Theatre is grateful to the many local businesses for supporting the raffle which contributed significantly to the overall total raised.

In the evening, Phoenix Musical Director, Mary Brigg, arranges a Gala Concert featuring the Phoenix Theatre Singers and guest soloists, with all proceeds going to Pudsey’s charity, Children in Need.

In front of a packed house this year, the Phoenix Theatre Singers sang medleys from Oliver, the King and I, Bond themes and Queen favourites, amongst other pieces.

The soloists were Guy Brigg MBE, awarded for his services to education and the community in Oxford, including youth theatre, and Julienne Reeves, a former leading soprano member of the Singers, making a welcome return.

They sang an interesting mix of standards and less well-known ballads, including a beautiful duet entitled “To Where You Are”. Richard Watson, the Singers’ brilliant accompanist, also amused the audience with some of his own brand of humorous and satirical songs. The evening ended with the audience on its feet, joining in a tumultuous encore of the tribute to Queen.

Over the day, a great time was had by all, which must have left Pudsey and the organisers with a huge smile on their faces.
