LOCAL town councillor Daniel Lister has decided to step away from his coalition with other councillors to continue his work as a fully independent member, writes Lottie Boyland.
Cllr Lister stated that his decision was not a reflection on any individual councillor or the relationships he has built within the coalition, made up of councillors from the Conservatives, Reform UK and independents and formed in a bid to counter the Liberal Democrat majority within the town council.
He added: “I have great respect for my fellow councillors, and I look forward to continuing to work constructively with them in the future.”
Cllr Lister’s decision was heavily influenced by his conversations with residents, who reminded him of the importance of retaining his clear, independent voice.
These conversations lead to him deciding that “the best way for me to represent the people is to remain entirely independent, free from any formal political grouping, while continuing to support good ideas and positive initiatives wherever they come from.”
Cllr Lister went on to thank all the members of the coalition for their support, cooperation, and commitment and he acknowledges that whilst they come from different political backgrounds and perspectives, they were united by a common desire to serve the community and the town.
Cllr Lister states he will continue to work with councillors from all parties and independents, supporting proposals that benefit the community and challenging those that he believes do not.
He said that his approach will remain practical, open-minded and guided by what is best and proposed by local people rather than political considerations.
Cllr Lister is appreciative of all those who have supported him, offered advice, and taken the time to share their views with him and remains committed to serving the town with honesty, independence and dedication.
