Much like at last year’s event, the weather did its best to dampen spirits at the Llangrove May Fayre, but the sun won the battle, and made sure that visitors had a tremendous afternoon’s fun.
An excellent turnout of visitors from far and wide enjoyed the many stalls, exhibitions, activities and refreshments on offer at the Fayre.
A stroll around the field of Llangrove Academy led to a pets corner, and an interesting exhibition by Forest of Dean Beekeepers, including chance to spot the Queen bee in the observation hive. There were also many stalls, activities and raffles for visitors to enjoy.
The Ross-on-Wye Town Band provided the musical backdrop, and the Forest of Dean Morris Men danced two sets, and invited visitors into the ring to join the fun.
When attendees had worn themselves out with skittles, donkey rides, cross bar challenge, ‘splat the rat’ and other delights, it was time to fuel up with a burger or hot dog, washed down with a glass of Pimms, cider or beer from the bar, ably run by Claire and Pete from the Royal Arms.
A highlight of the afternoon was the Maypole dancing by local children from Leapfrogs, Llangrove Academy, Whitchurch and Llangrove Cubs and Llangrove Brownies, with the Llangrove School recorder group playing as the May Queen entered the ring.
The intricate dances included the Barley Twist, Spiders Web, the Gypsy Tent Dance and the Traditional Plait Dance. A fearsome looking dragon suddenly appeared and threatened to cause mayhem, but fortunately, St George was on hand, and rode into the ring to save the day.
After all the excitement, there was nothing for it but to head to the tea tent to re-fuel on delicious cakes, washed down with tea or soft drinks.
Funds raised during the afternoon will be shared between the Llangrove Village Hall, Llangrove Academy and Christ Church Llangrove. The organisers would like to say a big thank you to all those who worked to provide such a great afternoon, and to all those who came along to support the event.
