Jesse Norman swept into Ross on Monday, May 10th much as he swept into Parliament on Thursday, May 6th, with a natural charm and charisma drawing people to him even as he stood in the Market Place for the Ross Gazette to photograph him as the new MP.
Jesse won 22,366 votes and will therefore represent the Hereford and South Herefordshire constituency. A former banker, lecturer at UCL and charity worker Jesse is one of the Old Etonians tipped for the top of the Conservative party. He was born in 1962 and was educated at Oxford University. He also has a Masters and PhD from University College London (UCL).
For the last three years Jesse has lived in Herefordshire and devoted himself to campaigning for the area. Jesse is a published author, his book Compassionate Conservatism has been called the 'handbook to Cameronism' by the Sunday Times, while the follow-up Compassionate Economics was described as 'the most intelligent political tract of 2009, and the best analysis of the credit crunch' in the Daily Telegraph online.
On Monday Jesse told The Ross Gazette he knew there was a difficult time ahead for the country but he was looking forward to the challenge of working as MP for the area. He was due at Westminster for meetings with the rest of the newly elected MPs on the way forward. On Tuesday morning he told The Ross Gazette: "When I arrived in Westminster I expected the usual routine of collecting a new laptop and so on. However it was extraordinary. There is a real mood of sober responsibility." He said "The Conservatives have offered to hold a referendum on a new voting system, this is of such significance it has to be decided by a referendum. He told The Gazette: "My first priority is the county and to get a fairer funding package but for now we are facing a constitutional crisis and this needs our full attention."
