Councillor Chris Bartrum, Deputy Mayor of Ross, was delighted to act as the representative for the town at the D Day Commemoration in Condé-sur- Noireau, on June 6th.
He told the Ross Gazette:?"The whole day was profoundly moving, stirring up many emotions – respect, awe and sadness, together with an optimism for the future made possible by so much sacrifice. So a moving day, a sad day, an impressive day and a day to remember."
June 6th, 2014 was a warm and sunny day in this Normandy town, people were going about their business, doing their shopping and exchanging pleasantries with friends and neighbours. But there was something special about this day. There was the French flag on display in the town centre. And alongside it were the flags of the United Kingdom, USA and Canada, as well as Germany and Italy. For 70 years ago, the Allies were landing on Normandy beaches and the beginning of the end of Nazi occupation of Europe and the Second World War had begun.
