MADAM, I wish my friends in Sellack every success with their labours to fundraise for the spire of St Tysilio's, but I was incredulous to read it described by you as 'the only English church dedicated to a Welsh Saint'.
In the Ross area alone St Deinst (Llangarron), St Dubricius (Hentland and Whitchurch), St David (Much Dewchurch), St Weonards and St Junabius (Llandinabo) testify to the peaceful takeover of Welsh churches by our Anglo-Saxon predecessors. The only sadness is that whatever records of this interesting process may have existed were destroyed in 1055 when a Welsh army burned Hereford Cathedral.
Revd Neil Patterson, Weston-under-Penyard
Editor's note: I think we should have said that St Tysilio's is 'the only English church dedicated to this Welsh saint'.
This area is lucky to be so rich in interesting and beautiful churches and many of them are worth a visit.
