Many residents have noticed that since the work on the wall at the top of Wilton Road took place recently, a large section of the wall is missing.

Councillor Richard Mayo told the Ross Town Council meeting on Monday, February 8th that the top four courses of bricks were found to be unstable following work to clean the wall.

He said the contractors were dismayed to find that they could actually remove the bricks by hand and no power tools were needed.

The wall will be reinstated at a later date and this project is ongoing.

A spokesman for Balfour Beatty Living Places who carried out the work told the Ross Gazette:?“Following concerns raised on the condition of a privately owned retaining wall on Wilton Road, Balfour Beatty Living Places, on behalf of Herefordshire Council, conducted a safety inspection of the wall. This inspection highlighted the instability of the top of the wall, identifying it as a risk to the general public.

“As a result, the road and pavement below were immediately closed to allow the unstable section of the wall to be taken down safely. This was done in conjunction with the owner of the wall.

“As the wall is a Grade Two listed structure, Herefordshire Council granted an emergency work order to allow the works to take place to the unstable section only.

“Further discussions around the long term work needed on the wall will be subject to a Listed Building Application and will take place in due course.”
