Bridstow parish councillors were incensed to learn that a plaque commemorating the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War had been stolen from its memorial garden in Wilton.
The loss was discovered and reported by a parishioner last weekend.
Councillor Russell B Hamilton said, "This is a despicable act of vandalism that shows no respect for our community or those who served our country to secure our future.
"It is a shame that the thieves could not put their efforts into doing something useful for their community. Anyone who knows anything about this theft should contact the police".
Councillor Hamilton added that it is particularly upsetting that it happened during the lead up to Remembrance Day on Sunday, November 14th.
The parish council will be replacing the plaque, at a cost of around £100.
