Anyone who keeps chickens, whether it is a large scale poultry farm or just a couple in the back garden, have been have been advised to keep all poultry inside for the next 30 days.

The government’s chief vet, Nigel Gibbens, has declared a “prevention zone” for England that requires commercial and individual bird keepers to keep their birds inside for 30 days or take steps to separate them from wild birds.

This move is to prevent an outbreak of a high-infectious strain of bird flu in Europe. The H5N7 strain is easily spread through wild, domestic and farmed birds.

Pultry keepers should take steps to remove any direct contact with wild birds. Simple fencing and netting can be used around their usual coop to help minimise the risks.

If you have any concerns about your chickens’ wellbeing or safety contact your vet for further advice.
