Weston Athletic took a break from the league to face Wooferton Colts in the quarter final of the HFA Junior Cup at Weston Playing Fields on Saturday. After a bruising encounter, Weston came away with a deserved 4 – 0 victory, to take their place in the semi final draw.
Managers Burnham and Morris were forced into a change before kick off when Dave Nicholls failed a later fitness test. Eli Wooding started up front with Liam Parry after missing out last week through suspension. The only other change from last weeks line up was Andrew James coming in to play in goal.
Weston settled in to the game quickly and soon found themselves a goal up after only six minutes – an excellent Burnham free kick across the face of goal was met by Steve Kittner at the back post to finish well from close range. The away side then had their best period of the game, when they started to put the back line of Weston under pressure, with several corners in quick succession. However they could not score due to some good defending and some woeful finishing. Slightly against the run of play Weston doubled their lead in the 30th minute, after a long ball over the top of a static defence by Burnham was chased down by Wooding. He whipped the ball into the box to be met by Alex Malsom to head home to put Weston two up and score his first of the season. The only negative of the first half came on 40 minutes when Lee Walker was sent off for a clumsy tackle on the away sides centre half, there was no malice meant with the tackle but the referee had no option but to send Walker off.
Although down to ten men, Weston continued to create most of the chances at the start of the second half and caused the away side's defence all kinds of problems. The away side seemed to lose the plot a bit from then on and eventually were reduced to ten men when their striker was sent off for a second bookable offence. The game was ended as a contest in the 58th minute when Liam Parry chased a lost cause in the corner. He stole the ball, squared it to Wooding who finished to make it three nil, Wooding scored again from the penalty spot after being hacked down himself on 70 minutes to complete the scoring and put Weston four up. The game was marred in the 85th minute when the away side's number eight horrifically elbowed Wooding in the face, which meant he had to go to hospital. The referee had no hesitation in branding a straight red card. Wooferton then embarrassed themselves with their reaction and poor sportsmanship, which gave the referee no option but to call the game off five minutes early. The result stands for Weston, who now face a semi final in February. All the lads can feel proud of the performance they put in and the way that they dealt with the thuggish performance of the away side in the second half.
T R Yates Man of Match – Liam Parry – A great all round battling performance. This week Weston face RedMarley in the league at home with kick off at 2pm.
