Madam, Thanks to Amey for all their hard work over the last week clearing the litter at the side of the A40 between Ross and Monmouth, the difference is remarkable.

It is a shame that they have to do this on a regular basis and remarkable how soon after it starts to reappear.

How many people stop to think about who is responsible for the problem in the first place and how much of our money has to be spent on cleaning the mess up. I am sure that the answer is not me it is someone else, but who and the cost must be tens of thousands.

Why do we accept this problem without the slightest of complaint yet if the Council were to ask Amey to burn a few thousand of our hard earned council tax pounds in a field at the side of the A40 a couple times a year there would be outrage.

The drive between Ross and Monmouth passes through some of our most beautiful countryside. Let's turn those who continue to litter our towns and countryside into social outcasts. They are no longer welcome, it is socially unacceptable and must be stopped.

I call upon the County Council to erect signs telling those travelling through our countryside how much we spend each year on clearing litter along this road and for the authorities to find a way to bring prosecutions against some of those responsible in order to set an example and new tone for the future.

Election time it might be but these are real issues that affect real people regardless of political persuasion.
