A couple from Whitchurch, Sue Hughes and Chris Lloyd completed their endurance charity challenge on Sunday, September 11th.
Sue and Chris cycled the length of the UK, from John O’ Groats to Land’s End, to raise funds for the Society for the Welfare of Horses and Ponies (SWHP).
Chris told the Ross Gazette that the fundraising side of the cycle had been going very well. Along the route, the couple stayed in B&Bs, and quite often, people they met along the route would make a contribution to their cause.
During their cycle challenge, the couple arrived in their home village of Whitchurch on Thursday evening (September 7th). They were approximately two thirds of the way through their journey, and were met by friends and family at Woods of Whitchurch, the village shop, when they arrived.
They were greeted by Lucy Gardner, the owner of Woods of Whitchurch, who has been helping the pair gather sponsorship money while they have been away, taking part in the charity cycle. Sue’s daughter-in-law, Lucy Hughes, and two of her grandchildren, Henry and Maisie, met them at the shop and were excited and relieved to see the pair had arrived safely.
Sue and Chris stayed the night, and left early the next morning to continue the next stage of their journey, finally arriving in Land’s End on Sunday evening, at 6pm.
Sue told the Ross Gazette: “We were so lucky with the weather during the last four days, after we left home. We had to pull over, off the road, to let the Tour of Britain bikers pass. It was a perfect viewing point, and we wouldn’t have wanted to be going that fast!"
To sponsor Chris and Sue for their challenge, text SWHP + the amount (£10 is the maximum) to 70070.
