A white rhino calf has been born at West Midlands Safari Park. The baby rhino is the first to be born at the Safari Park, near Bewdley in Worcestershire, for a decade.
On Friday, March 25th just after 7pm, Ailsa, a southern white rhino, gave birth to the beautiful baby boy.
Six year old Ailsa and her calf are currently off-show as they share some important bonding time.
The white rhinoceros is the largest extant species of rhinoceros. It has a wide mouth used for grazing and is the most social of all rhino species. The white rhinoceros is considered to consist of two subspecies: the southern white rhinoceros, with an estimated 20,000 wild-living animals, and the much rarer northern white rhinoceros. The northern subspecies has very few remaining, with only three confirmed individuals left (two females and one male), all in captivity.
