MADAM, You may be aware that this year The Royal British Legion are celebrating their 90th Anniversary. Our local Branch was formed in 1923 and we still have a membership of over 100, although each year our numbers are decreasing. We have people from all walks of life – it is not necessary to be ex-military to join us.

The idea behind the celebrations is to make people aware that everyone is welcome, especially the younger generation, for these are the people who will make sure that the Royal British Legion continues to support our brave Servicemen and woman who have served and continue to serve our country so gallantly, also their families.

I am the membership secretary of the Ross Branch and it is my job to enrol new members. Almost everyone I approach agree that this great organisation should continue with its support of our Armed Forces but sadly I am finding it quite hard to get them to fill in the membership forms.

I know times are hard for many at the moment and as a senior citizen myself I know that every day, either by post or by hand, someone is always collecting for charity and it becomes very hard to choose the most deserving, but I urge you to consider joining us, your contribution will make a real difference.

Our next event for the 90th Anniversary will be on Saturday July 23rd at Wilton Castle where we will be hosting a 1940/1950s themed afternoon tea, with all your old favourites. There will be live music, prize draw, games for the children and tour of the historic castle – a real family treat – starting at 2pm until 5.30pm. Adults £5 and children £3 (including party bag). For tickets please ring 01989 566301 or pay on arrival.

Please come along and meet our members and find out more about the Royal British Legion.
