WILDPLAY sessions in Bromyard could lead to a three-year partnership bringing affordable outdoor activities to families across Herefordshire.

Platform Housing Group is exploring a longer-term arrangement with Herefordshire Wildlife Trust following the success of nature-based play sessions held during the school holidays.

The housing provider helped fund the programme, with additional money secured through a third-party donation, allowing children to enjoy outdoor activities while parents and carers met other local families.

The sessions also gave Platform an opportunity to hear residents' views about life in Bromyard, including concerns over limited transport, isolation and the rising cost of everyday essentials.

Christine Bailey, community engagement officer at Platform Housing Group, said: “The WildPlay sessions were about much more than giving children something enjoyable to do during the school holidays.”

She added: “We heard that families value the town’s strong sense of community, but we also heard about the impact of transport difficulties, isolation and the cost of keeping children occupied throughout the holidays.”

Most children attending were aged eight or under, although activities were open to those aged up to 13.

Each two-hour session cost approximately £6.50 per participant, with organisers also considering indoor winter activities and sessions aimed at older children.

The Foodbank, money advice services, Hope Centre, Kempson Recreation Ground and St Peter’s Primary School helped promote the events.

Julia Morton, youth and wellbeing officer at Herefordshire Wildlife Trust, said the programme had helped children connect with nature for more than 25 years.

She said: “We would love to build on the success of these sessions and reach more Platform communities throughout Herefordshire.”

Any three-year partnership would depend on securing funding, but could provide regular activities in neighbourhoods where transport difficulties and financial pressures prevent families accessing other holiday provision and encourage stronger connections between local families and communities.
