Ross Ramblers went for a 4 mile amble around Merrivale and Penyard Woods, starting from the Fernbank Road car-park, for the Tuesday morning walk on December 16th .

The party of seventeen set off through the Hereford Nature Trust reserve emerging onto the open hill near Hill Farm for a bright but slightly misty view of the town.

Not far into Penyard Woods the red flag was flying for the rifle range. Unfortunately, the walk leader was unable to get any response from the firing control officer on the field phone provided for the purpose. A change of route was therefore decided and walkers retraced their steps to take the track to the south side of Penyard Park, with views to Chase Woods and Howle Hill.

In spite of the popping of occasional gunfire it was very still and quiet in the woods except for the footsteps and chatter of the ramblers, and a freshening breeze above the trees.

The return route via Lawns Farm took the walkers south of the firing range and again rejoined the outward route at the top of the nature reserve.

Instead of walking, 45 members opted for Christmas lunch at the Riverbed, at Fownhope on December 13th. Everyone enjoyed the food and the company. Thanks were given to the group's excellent Social Secretary, Thelma, who made the arrangements.

The Ramblers Association (Ross Group) Winter Festival walk on Saturday, December 27th, will be a 7 mile energetic walk in the hills south of Ross, leaving Fernbank Road car park at 10 am. Bring a packed lunch. Details from Yvonne on 01594 839294.

There will also be a Tuesday morning walk on December 30th: details from Thelma on 01989 563874.

Ross Ramblers welcome non members on its walks, at their own risk. Please wear suitable clothes and footwear for country walking and contact the leader if you are in doubt about the grade of walk.
