Western Power is due to finish installing one kilometre of underground cables on Copse Cross Street, by December 1st, Herefordshire County Councillor Richard Mayo told members of Ross Town Council. Speaking at the Full Council meeting on Monday night, Councillors Richard Mayo and Phil Cutter, who are both members of Ross Town Council and Herefordshire Council, said that they have been working together during the road closure, to ensure that things run smoothly.

Cllr Richard Mayo said Western Power are not able to keep the road closed after December 1st, but the company is on track to have the work completed by this date, so they should not need to implement a second road closure afterwards.

Cllr Mayo added that the Western Power contractors had been trying their best to get the work done in time. He said: “They’ve been working very hard, and all weekend, and in the rain.”

Throughout the duration of the road closure, an emergency traffic regulation order was implemented for Alton Street, from the junction of Copse Cross Street to the junction of Penyard Lane, to prevent cars parking in this area.

A temporary one-way traffic flow system has also come into effect on Kent Avenue; traffic has been prevented from entering the street from Walford Road.

Cllr Phil Cutter said that although some residents have complained about the loss of on-street parking spaces, the temporary system had been successful in improving the traffic management problems with the roadworks. He said: “We have to make the best decision for everyone.”

He added that some motorists have been inconsiderate and have ignored the no-parking rule on Alton Street. He said that the bollards make it obvious that they cannot park there. “If people would just do what we want them to do for a short period, it would be good for everybody,” he said.

Pictures have been posted on social media of cars flouting the no parking signs.

Cllr Cutter added that the residents of Kent Avenue have been trying to get a permanent one-way system implemented there, and work is still ongoing to try to achieve this.
