Dear Editor,

In light of Remembrance day, I wanted to share with you a picture of my youngest granddaughter Amelia Rita May Lewry at a Remembrance service. I think the picture really captures something and melts everyone’s heart who sees it, showing that the youngest of generations still learn about the sacrifice of our service men and women.

As we were walking towards the cenotaph Amelia said, “nanny, why are there lovely flowers here?”

Without me realising, she had sat like that. I told her how a long time ago, a lot of very brave men had a big fight to make sure we all were able to live happily and safely. As a way to remember them and say thank you, we put flowers in special places.

She asked where the men were and I said with “nanny’s mummy,” so she looked at me and smiled and said they are stars in heaven as well, and just seemed to reflect on what I had said. To be honest, it wasn’t until I looked back over my phone pictures, that I realised just how stunning and thought-provoking the picture actually was.

Amelia’s Mum then said, “Amelia what do you know about poppies and why they wear them?”

Amelia replied, “soldiers went away to fight, but now they are in heaven. So someone puts circles of poppies in special lovely places so we can go look at them.”
