The final game of the Wyvern League took place at the Ross-on-Wye Bowling Green, and saw RBC Ladies’ triples rink of Sue Dix, Joan Baker and Marcia Gwynne; with reserves of Elaine George and Mary Gardner. They were on equal points with Lydney at the top of their league, with Ross having a good shots difference, having only lost one game by one shot. The only way Ross could lose their place at the top of the league was if Monmouth defeated them by more then 40 shots, but it was Ross ladies who took the points, winning by 26 shots to 11, and won the Ladies section of the Wyvern competition.
It was a different matter for the Ross Men in their final game against Monmouth BC, who led Ross by 16 points going into this fixture. In an emotional final league game the Ross men knew they needed all 18 points to retain the trophy, and after three Ross rinks finished with good wins, it was down to the last rink on the green of Rob George, John Perks (President), Harold Aubrey and skip Terry Brock, who went into the last three ends 13 – 17 down against their Monmouth opposition. Not much pressure! Over the next two ends Ross drew level 17 – 17, with both club’s members watching and encouraging their respective rink, it was the first three players from Ross rink who put the Monmouth skip under pressure; putting five excellent woods on or around the jack. Terry played blocking shots to close the angles for the Monmouth skip who, with his first wood, removed one of Ross’ shots. As Monmouth had the best back woods Terry decided to play a running wood at the jack to take it back, but his last wood clipped a short Ross wood, whicht left Ross holding four shorts to win 21 – 17 on the last end so the Ross Men gained the 18 points needed to become 2016 Wyvern League Champions.
In the Men’s Herefordshire League Division 1 Ledbury BC won the competition with Ross A second, Ross C was fourth and Ross B was eighth. Ross D, in Division 2, still has two fixtures left to play.
In the Ladies National Championships, Teresa Williams, Mary Gardner, and Kate Williams represented Herefordshire in the Triples but lost in their first round. In the first round of the National Junior Pairs on Saturday 20th August, Kate and Megan Thompson lost to the junior pair from Hampshire.
In the Singles competition, Ross members Dave Magness and Martin Smith will represent Herefordshire at this year’s Men’s Bowls England Championship.
