JACK Cowles fired 17 fours in a superb 86 as Newent 1sts beat Gloucestershire Division 3 derby hosts Dymock by seven wickets on Saturday.

Will Trumper bowled Dymock opener Dan Gale first ball for a golden duck in a dramatic start.

But Cowles was matched in batting terms by host skipper Brandon Caffull, who fired 84, including two sixes and 13 fours, as they set a target of 210-5 off their 40 overs.

James Field also scored an unbeaten 49 for Dymock, with Liam Devries starring with the ball taking 2-15 off eight overs, backed by single strikes from Trumper, Cowles and Paul Carter.

Cowles, fresh off 190 not out the week before, then continued where he left off, backed by Trumper with 50, Carter 24 not out and George Ayland 21, as they reached 213-3 with 2.4 overs to spare.

But Newent Lions were well beaten by 149 runs in a third v second Gloucestershire 9B clash away to Gloucester AIW 2nds.

The hosts compiled 262-5 off their 40 overs, Charlie Lacy with two wickets, before skittling Newent for 113 in 29 overs, only skipper Josh Ralph making any real mark with the bat, scoring 30.

And in another derby, the 3rds were beaten by nine wickets away to Redmarley 2nds, all out for 96 before the hosts raced to 101-1 in just 10 overs.

Charlie Edgell scored 33 for Newent backed by Mark Franklin and Tony Nightingale with 19s, with Josh Ellis taking five wickets for the villagers.

Newent Women’s Softball side visit Woodmancote on Thursday evening (August 14) while their Women’s Hardball XI take on Ruardean Hill away on Sunday (August 17).
