Ross Cricket Club First XI overcame Goodrich Seconds in the sunshine and heat of Saturday, June 29th. Ross captain, Graham Howls, won an important toss and chose to bat to try and use the conditions to build a good score to defend later, in what would hopefully be cooler temperatures.

The game certainly went to Ross’ plan as once Howls was out for 21, Angus McIntyre and Andrew Bevan put on 160 for the second wicket, striking eighteen boundaries to sap the Goodrich energy.

No-one was in a great hurry to finish the lovely tea, although when Goodrich did start their reply, the clouds gathered a bit to help Ross’ cause further. Charlie Cole was the first bowler to strike, taking two wickets in an opening spell, including a well taken catch from Chloe Tingle who fielded excellently throughout.

Goodrich had been well aware their bowlers had made their team’s task more difficult by conceding 32 extras in the first innings, but Ross did not then learn from this by sending down 30 wides of their own, meaning extras were more than any of the visiting batters scores.

Despite some low order resistance from Jon Pickering, and Andy Waldis, Ross were delighted to finally wrap the innings up winning by 109 runs well into Saturday evening.

Ross Firsts have consolidated their mid table position, ahead of the visit of Ledbury on Saturday. Ross Seconds, sponsored by Now Storage Ltd, did not have a game last Saturday, and entertain touring team Swanmore from Southampton next week.See the full story in this week’s edition of the Ross Gazette, or subscribe to our online edition here
