In a thrilling match at Brockhampton Cricket Ground, Wormelow 3rd’s were pipped by the home side in a game that entertained a small but enthusiastic crowd last Saturday.

Wormelow captain Dan Hale won the toss and elected to bat on a dampened pitch which looked to offer something to the spinners on a beautiful summer’s day. Openers Ian Herbert (23) and Andy Lancaster (20) provided a brilliant start to Wormelow’s innings, but when Lancaster departed with the score on 49, the middle-order failed to capitalise on a solid foundation, with Stonadge, Hohne and Porter departing for low scores as Wormelow struggled to 82-7.

An heroic fightback from father-and-son duo James and Will Boiling (52 and 15) gave Wormelow a competitive total of 163 all out from their 40 overs.

Brockhampton began brightly, when the openers Pritchard (43) and Holgate (78) really took the game away from Wormelow, but a late fightback with excellent economy bowling from Herbert (1-21) and J Boiling (1-13) pegged Brock back to needing 43 from their final 10 overs.

But dogged nerve from youngsters Skerrett and Morris saw Brock home with two balls to spare. A game played in good spirit with a competitive edge, Brockhampton were deserved winners in a nail-biting finish.

Wormelow will hope to redeem themselves next week as they take on Glangrwyney CC at Kingstone High School.
