Weston Athletic recorded their fourth league victory in a row on Saturday in the North Gloucestershire Division 2, with a comfortable 5 - 1 home victory over Rank Outsiders. Prolific striker Eli Wooding scored two to take his season's tally to an impressive 40 goals.
Weston were forced into one change before kick off, with Alex Malsom unavailable for selection. Wayne Husbands came into the back three with Paul Burnham and Chalky Robertshaw. The midfield was unchanged for the fourth game in a row with Liam Parry, Steve Kittner, Lee Walker, Dave Nicholls and Jack Bray. Wooding and Wes Downing paired together up front.
It did not take long for Weston to take the lead and were one up after only five minutes on the clock. Wooding found Nicholls on the edge of the box, who was given space to get away a well directed shot into the bottom corner to put Weston in the lead.
Wooding was denied what looked a penalty after only ten minutes, however the referee did not take long to award Weston their first penalty of the game. Wooding broke into the box and was pulled back by the away side's centre half, the ref had no hesitation in pointing to the spot, up stepped Wooding to put Weston two up. A moment of slack marking allowed the away side's centre midfielder to break into the box. The first shot was well saved by Morris in goal, but the rebound fell back to the same player to slot the ball into an empty net. Weston should have been further ahead at half time but Downing wasted a couple of good opportunities. Burnham hit the cross bar with a well struck free kick, and they had to settle for a 2 - 1 half time lead.
The second half started much the same with Weston creating chances at will and the away side offering little in terms of attacking football. It did not take Weston long to score their third goal, this time through another penalty when Parry was chopped down in the box. Up stepped Wooding who sent the keeper the wrong way to put Weston three up.
Their fourth goal eventually came from Kittner with a well directed header from a Wooding corner. Weston's fifth and final goal came from Downing, when he rounded the keeper and finished well after being played in by Nicholls. Towards the end of the game Wooding had the chance to score his hat trick but his penalty was well saved by the away side's keeper.
T R Yates Man of the Match was Eli Wooding.
Weston will hope to continue their run of good form over the coming weeks when they play a series of games against mid table opposition as they push for promotion.
This week Weston are at home against White Horse with kick off at 2.30pm.
