ROSS Juniors Women’s FA Cup run came to an end at higher-ranked Gloucester City on Sunday, as the youngsters put in a spirited show.

The visitors fell behind early on, but almost forced an equaliser when Darcy Baker’s pressure led to a defender heading just wide of her keeper’s post.

But Lauren Creed was then forced off with a hamstring injury, and two more goals saw Ross trailing 3–0 after 38 minutes before two outstanding Ruby Wood saves just before the break.

Ella Jones then returned to action for the first time in over a year following a serious injury, and gave fresh energy alongside fellow replacement Jessica Rumsey.

But on 58 minutes Ross conceded a fourth when a shot bounced off the the bar and ‘crossed’ the goal-line.

Tired legs began to show as Ross (sponsored by HP Scaffolding, The Hope and Anchor, 21Wellbeing and Pronto’s Pizza Kebab) gave everything, but two more goals followed late on for a 6-0 loss.

Manager Carl Roberts said: “We knew this was going to be a tough game. Gloucester are sharper and fitter due to the level they train and play at.

“But our girls did themselves proud — they never gave up and gave everything for the badge. With just one player over 19 in the squad, this young team will only get stronger and gain valuable experience from occasions like this.”

Meanwhile, Ross Ladies kept up their 100% unbeaten Herefordshire League start with two stoppage time goals to secure a dramatic 3-2 comeback home win over Wellington.

A terrific Danie Ward strike made it 1-1 on 29 minutes, but the visitors scored a second before half-time and were still in front three minutes into second-half injury time, when a Jess Brain shot made it 2-2.

And a low drive from Ward with virtually the last kick then amazingly secured all three points.

Juniors Women host Worcester on Sunday (September 28) while the Ladies host Belmont.
