Ross-on-Wye Juniors gave their best performance in several weeks and were unlucky to lose 2:1 in this closely fought away game at Coventry, who currently lie second in the table.
The Juniors started well with Owain and Luke linking up in attack, while Elliott and Nathaniel were a strong presence in midfield. There were few goal-scoring chances, but Ross had most of the possession. Against the run of play Coventry scored; a quick break followed by a low angle shot which reserve goalie Kane could do nothing about.
After the goal the initiative switched to Coventry, who put pressure on the Ross goal, Kane, who had stepped in as the Juniors’ regular goalkeeper was unavailable, put in a superb performance, including some fantastic point blank saves. Ross held Coventry to one-nil until the beginning of the second half when the home team scored again, but to their credit the Juniors didn’t let their heads drop. They quickly pulled a goal back when Elliot’s free kick found Joel who slammed the ball into the net.
For the rest of the game Ross pushed hard for an equaliser, but the well-organised Coventry defence kept them out. This was a creditable performance by the Juniors and shows that they are beginning to recover some of the form that made them so good to watch in the first half of the season.
