The latest major in Ross Golf Club’s golfing calendar for their men seniors members, the Ernest Penn trophy, resulted in 103 taking part with course conditions suiting good scoring and so it proved.
19 handicapper Robin Henderson-Pugh captured six consecutive gross pars on his front 9 holes play so that his 23 stableford points total at the half-way stage meant he was well in contention to finish top of the final score-sheet and his ultimate 43 points score was just enough.
For Robin, it will have revived memories of almost exactly 5 years ago when he last achieved some honours board status in seniors colours, winning the Keene Cup and this latest success also comes with a 2 shots handicap reduction.
For runner-up, 22 handicapper Barry Smith, his 43 points total not only resulted in him just missing out on the title on count-back but also denied him winning the 2018 Ernest Penn and Keene Cup Trophies in the same month. Barry’s remarkable season of golfing improvement involved winning the Keene Cup two weeks ago, and has also seen him reduce his handicap by a massive 7 shots in just a few months, having started the season on 26 and now able to play consistently off 19.
They were followed by 9 handicapper Peter Bennett, whose impressive 41 points total means he will now play off an 8 handicap with David M Rees in close pursuit with 40 points and Roger Alford with 39 points. 2017 Seniors Champion Robin Darling was not far out with 38 points as was Alan Docherty, also with 38 points.
