Ross Juniors U8s played their final league game of the season on Saturday, April 13th with another dominant performance at home to Coreley.
The home side went ahead with their first attack of the game as Riley set up Tyron’s first goal and Tyron almost doubled their lead with a long range effort. There didn’t seem to be much of a threat from Coreley as Ross pushed for more goals but they were caught out with a long ball that found a Coreley player completely unmarked on the edge of their area and he did well to turn and slot the ball past Owen to bring the scores level.
Despite that setback, the home side continued to create chances with Riley forcing the Coreley keeper into a good save and Jasper seeing his shot strike the post. Ross were awarded a penalty after a defender handled the ball and Jasper stepped up and slotted the ball into the bottom corner to restore their lead.
Two great strikes from Tyron completed his hat-trick and he then got a 4th when he got on the end of Riley’s corner. Tyron might have had another goal but for a good save from the Coreley goalkeeper before Leighton grabbed a goal with a great left foot strike. Coreley kept battling and managed to grab a 2nd goal and they nearly grabbed another but luckily Zak made a vital tackle and clearance. Late on in the half Jasper brought a good save from the Coreley keeper.
Coreley were much improved in the second half and there wasn’t much between the two teams early on. Alex almost scored following a good run but his shot was saved before Zak was called on to make an important clearance. Zak made a great run out of defence and finished it with a brilliant pass between two opponents but Ross couldn’t take advantage of it. Tyron made a good save before Owen went on a great run too. Zak went on another great run out of defence as the home side started to dominate the game again but they made hard work of it in the final third. Jasper went close, Alex had a shot saved and Owen had a shot that just cleared the crossbar. There was only one goal in the second half and it came right at the end of the game but it was a very good team goal. Tyron threw the ball out to Riley who took the ball up the left wing, beating two opponents, before crossing the ball to Owen who scored with a first-time effort.
Attention now turns to the U8 cup final which will take place at Edgar Street on May 4th. A spokesperson for Ross Juniors said: “Whatever the outcome, this has been a fabulous season.”See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
