Weston under Penyard Football Club is almost 100 years old and to celebrate this enormous achievement, the current members are inviting all former players and managers to meet up at the village hall on July 8th.
The aim of the event is to get everybody together, meet old team mates, talk about old times, and hopefully have some old memorabilia on show. The evening starts at 6pm and after time for reminiscing there will be a race night.
However everyone is welcome to come along for a drink and chat even if you not interested in the racing.
Please contact Steve Salmon 07971 197555, 01989 567493 or Rich Annison 07392 182011 for further details.
Weston was formed sometime between 1916 and 1921, but it took 20 years before they won anything in the Ross League.
In the 1923-24 season they reached the final of the Charity Bowl but lost 6-1 to Hereford Thistle who later changed their name to Hereford United.
It was the last season before the Second World War when they won the Ross Hospital Cup, their manager at that time was a Mr George Price.
After winning several more trophies the club was finally admitted to the South Hereford League in 1949-50 season, which they won in their first season.
Now, after all these years of Herefordshire and Worcester league they are, along with Hinton, the longest surviving club in the league.
From the start of the sixties the club either won or come runners-up in the league or won a major trophy from 1961 to 1972 season. In the 1970-71 season their honours included league champions, senior cup winners and Kington cup runners up. Since 1921 the club has won or been runners up in the league on 15 occasions.
As stated in a local paper in 1968 after its annual dinner/dance ‘there is no doubt that Weston could be a force in local football for many years to come and if they are it will be worthy reward for a village which is proud of its local team’.
Weston have withdrawn their Gloucestershire team and have entered the two teams back into Herefordshire football. For the coming season training starts on July 5th, both old and new players are very welcome.
