A combined Ross Juniors U9 and Saturday Club team travelled to Wellington on Saturday, February 1st for a friendly.

Ross got off to a great start as Owen and Ben set up Bobby to score his 5th goal in just 4 games and they continued to threaten the Wellington goal with Ben going close and Timmy clipping the crossbar. There were further efforts from Timmy and Rhys before Wellington had a chance with a counter-attack but Mario made a vital clearance. Late on in the half a forward pass from Timmy looked like it would be collected by the Wellington keeper but he failed to gather in the ball and Owen pounced to score from an acute angle.

The visitors continued to dominate the game in the 2nd half but found Wellington’s new goalkeeper in great form. There was a great chance for Ross to extend their lead as Ben’s initial shot was saved but Bobby’s follow up was stopped on the goal-line. The Wellington defence scrambled to clear the ball but there was a further chance for Rhys which was blocked. Timmy went on a number of good runs out of defence but there was no beating the Wellington keeper. Wellington went close to reducing the deficit but their player scooped the ball over Mario (now in goal) and over the crossbar before eventually getting a goal from a direct free kick late on.

More friendlies are planned to prepare the team for entry into the HJFL next season. If your child is currently in year 4 and keen to get involved please email [email protected]
