Both Ross Juniors U9 sides were in futsal action on Sunday, February 9. Ross Greens were unlucky to lose to Lads Club (2 - 1) in their opening Division 2 match but bounced back with a 3 - 2 win against Tenbury Tigers.
Ross were unlucky against Lads Club with Timmy hitting the post early on and then fell behind. Timmy equalised before Leighton went close twice, the latter effort striking the post again. Jasper was doing well, beating opponents and setting up chances but Ross couldn’t convert them.
Ethan and Timmy both went close in the second half before Dan was called on to make a vital tackle. Unfortunately, with just minutes left, Ross failed to make a clearance and Lads Club scored from their only chance of the half and they held on to the victory.
Ross performed better against Tenbury Tigers but it was a close affair. Jasper set up an early chance for Timmy before Leighton made a great save to ensure they didn’t fall behind. Timmy then put Ross one up before the break.
Tenbury scored from a deflection at the beginning of the second half before Jasper was unlucky to see his shot strike the far post with the keeper beaten. Leighton made another good save before Timmy scored two quick goals to set the Ross on their way. Tenbury pulled a goal back to make the final minutes interesting but Ross saw the game out to secure their first win of the final group stage.
Ross Juniors had the tough task of playing last season’s futsal champions in their first match. The match was a physical battle but played in a great spirit due to the respect both teams have for one another. Ross got off to a great start with Euan & Tyron combining to put Ross ahead but Leominster equalised straight away, and then went ahead with a thunderbolt of a shot. Morgan pulled off a number of good saves to keep the deficit at one before Tyron scored from a set piece (with Riley assisting).
The second half was a cagey affair with both defences on top. Ross forced Leominster into taking long range shots whereas they probed a bit more through Tyron and Alex. A poor clearance late on from the Leominster keeper went straight to Tyron and he returned the ball with a bit of interest to score, what turned out to be, the winner.
In their second match, Ross Juniors dominated the first half with Owen and Tyron combining particularly well but had nothing to show for it before Kington scored with their first shot on target. Football goes like that sometimes.
Ross went on the attack in the second half and it paid off as Tyron scored two and set up Alex to take 3 - 1 lead but Kington scored from a counter-attack and then equalised with a terrific header. All that hard work looked like it had been undone until Alex brought the ball out of defence and hit a ferocious shot that the Kington keeper couldn’t handle, and the boys’ 100 per cent record in the futsal stayed intact.
