Ross Juniors Colts U17s welcomed Pegasus Juniors U17s to The Sports Club on Sunday for a league match. Pegasus are unbeaten this season, and are top of the league with 35 points from 13 games, so the Ross boys were expecting them to be formidable opponents.
The first half kicked off with the lads playing with the wind behind them. They penned Pegasus in their own half for long periods, but chances were few and far between. Wilf probably had the best chance, but fired wide of the target.
Pegasus did venture into the Ross half on a few occasions, and when they did threaten, they found keeper Archie and the back four of Will M, Dan C, H and Pirlo on top form.
There was a great battle in midfield for Aaron, Dan F, Wilf and Lewis, they fought really hard to keep the Peggy boys at bay and proved to be more than a match for their opposition; they linked up well with Erny and Jack up front, who proved to be a handful with their pace and skill.
In all fairness, the Colts just about edged the first half, but they knew that the second would be harder with the wind in their faces.
During halftime, Manger Tony Fletcher made a few changes, he brought Nat on in midfield and Marcus took up the left back position.
After the second half kicked off, Pegasus quickly got into gear, and it took a while for the Ross lads to settle, but once they had got used to the conditions, they spent more and more time in Pegasus’ half.
The game went on, and on one occasion, Peggy broke into the Ross 18 yard box, H went to tackle the forward but clipped his ankle. Peggy were awarded a penalty, it was a fair decision, so there was no argument from The Colts. One of the normally reliable Peggy midfielders stepped up to take the kick; he gave it a good crack and sent the ball high over the bar and into the car park.
The game continued with the boys pressing Peggy back in their own half. Peggy had now resorted to some cynical fouling, it was the only way that they could stop the boys. They had two players yellow carded and it was clear that they were getting frustrated.
For one infringement, Ross were awarded a free kick, from about 25 yards out. Jack stepped up to take it, he sent the ball up over the wall and it was aiming for the top corner, everybody thought it was going in, but at the last second it raised up over the bar and out of play. That was about the end of the match.
At full time, the score was Ross Juniors U17 0 - Pegasus Juniors U17 0.
Tony Fletcher told the Gazette: “This was one of the best performances that The Colts have put in this season, against the best side in the league, they are six games unbeaten now and are going from strength to strength.
“The One Stop men of the match was the whole team, they were tremendous.”
The Colts next game is at home against Westfields on Sunday, March 5th.
