Ross Junior Mens side played League leaders Weston at home on Saturday, and after a tasty match, they won 3-2. Ross was certainly up for the challenge that Weston was going to be.
Ross started the game on the front foot and were holding the ball well. Defender Wayne Husbands led from the back, along with Alex Malsom and Sammy Taylor, with CM Callum McCulloch in the middle of the park.
The first chance to score fell to striker Brad Wooding, but his effort went just over the bar. Ross seemed more dominant with the ball and the team were playing well around the Weston players; Dave Nicholls flicked the ball past the defender on the edge of the box, but put his shot just wide of the post.
Weston won the ball in midfield and played their striker in, but he missed a one-on-one chance with Ross keeper Callum Trotman. Just before half time, Husbands made a phenomenal tackle to stop a Weston break.
Ross was more confident going into the second half but after ten minutes they found themselves a goal down. The game was hotting up even more now with some tasty tackles going in. Ross picked up the ball from their own half, which made its way to Wooding, who switched ball out wide to Luke Harris. He took a touch and smashed it in with his weaker foot 1 - 1.
Weston had a free kick and scored with some sloppy defending from Ross. Ross soon found themselves on the back foot again, but a last ditch tackle from Kristian Milnes stopped another break from the Weston attack. Winger Harris made way for Toby Alexander.
Ross was not giving up and was still creating chances from midfield trio Jack Bray, McCulloch and Nicholls. It was soon 2 - 2 when Ben Gardner played in Wooding who fired it home with a sweet left footed shot. Ross wanted to get that winner and Gardner fluffed a golden chance on the half volley. But with five minutes to go, Nicholls had the ball played to him just inside the box, and with a ‘Messi like dink’ the ball went over the Weston keeper and slotted into the back of the net to win the game.
The Physio and Health Matters Man of the Match went to the match winner, Dave Nicholls.
Ross Juniors Men are not only looking good on the pitch, they are second in the league, but they will also improve their team appearance off the pitch, thanks to two local businesses who have sponsored them.
Physio and Health Matters physiotherapy practice and Rub A Dub Dub dry cleaners, have provided T-shirts for the team to wear to, and from, their matches, both at home and away.
