Saturday, September 1st saw the first round of fixtures in the Herefordshire County League. Ross Juniors are fielding two teams this year, one in Division 1 and the other in Division 2.

The Division 1 team Managed by Dan Morris and Carl Roberts had the brightest of starts with a 5-0 win over Bartstree Reserves at home. The team deservedly felt frustrated at half time coming in 0-0, having had two clear penalty decisions being rejected. This though inspired them to start the second half stronger and immediately went into a 1-0 lead, thanks to a clean finish from Mikey Donaldson.

The goals then flowed and the football was fantastic to watch. Bartstree had no answer to Ross’ football and quick breaks. Florin Cranic, James Reid and Eli Wooding, all taking their opportunities well, to take it 4-0 for Ross and then Florin added his second and Ross’ fifth with the most audacious of chips that left the visiting goalie stranded.

The men’s team were pleased that attendees from the McDonalds day earlier had stayed to watch the game and in front of a crowd of over 50 they started the season brilliantly. The team beforehand were presented with their new kit thanks to local company Howdens. A spokesperson for Howdens commented that they were delighted to support a local football team in Ross Juniors FC and wished them success for the season.

The second Ross team in division 2 had a very tough start, being drawn away to Malvern Vale, despite going down 3-0 at half time, the team never gave up and continued to battle. This was rewarded with two goals for Patrick Virgo and a final score of 3-2.

There were many positives to take from the comeback, this is a brand new side with one of its aims being that boys who play for Ross Juniors boys sides to Under 17 level can then progress into adults football with the club.

Ross Juniors FC are seeking a sponsor for the second team’s kit and would be keen to hear from any local businesses that could help, please contact Jim at: [email protected] if interested.See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
