Ross Rowing Club's juniors had an outstanding day at the Junior Inter-regional Regatta, representing the West Midlands in one of the most prestigious events in the junior rowing calendar. Hundreds of crews from around the country converged on Holme Pierrepont in Nottingham to represent their regions, made up of the cream of the country's rowers between the ages of 14 and 16.
Three crews came away with coveted medals: Nick Burden won bronze in the J15 double with his partner from Stratford, Jess Crossman and Catrin Morris powered through late to secure silver in the WJ16 double, and a gold medal was the reward for a quad made up of Isobel Newey, Echo Callaghan, Jess Saxon-Macrostie, Scarlett Brodholt and Olli Sturgess (cox) for a truly stunning performance in the WJ14 event.
Very brave single sculling performances were delivered by Ali Banks-Martin and Tom Scott, and two Ross J16 coxed four crews were selected to represent the West Midlands and rowed well against stiff opposition from the big rowing schools. Emily Leach, also of Ross, competed in a composite crew in the WJ15 coxed 4 and just missed out on a medal, finishing 4th in a keenly contested event.
The West Midlands team came third out of 12 in the team championship with the members from Ross making a very significant contribution to the points total.
The Ross Crews will now start preparations for the National Schools Regatta – the "Henley" of junior rowing.
