NINE-YEAR-OLD George Swann recently won the David Sainsbury Junior Trophy at Ross-on-Wye Golf Club.
The youngster attends The Downs Malvern Prep School and has been playing golf since he was seven.
In the past year, George has been playing in Golf Sixes and some nine-hole competitions and has come in second and third in a few local events, so he was thrilled to win this time against strong competition.
This is an 18-hole competition for under-18s, so he enjoyed competing against many older boys.
Completing 18 holes typically takes over four hours but he succeeded in going around the course in a lightning 3 and a half hours.
George won the competition with a nett score of 63 – hitting on par for some holes and the seventh and 16th holes, in particular, going really well.
His Stableford score was a robust 46 points, a really significant achievement.
George also enjoys playing rugby, cricket and his electric guitar.
He has been visiting lots of golf courses and is aiming to play at 100 courses by the time he is 10.
And he also hopes to one day follow in the footsteps of Bryson DeChambeau and maybe in the future play at the Masters!
A performance in Happy Gilmore 3 would also be lots of fun!
Meanwhile, the Gorsley-based club’s Tim Hall School of Golf run by their head professional, has been planning its first 2026 ‘Coaching Break’, with players set to head for Sotogrande in Spain – home to Europe's number one golf coastline.
Tim said: “We’ve already emailed the 50+ members who registered their initial interest, but don’t worry, there is still time to get involved!
“We will be hosting two distinct groups to ensure we have a trip perfectly designed for every golfer, from those seeking a social getaway to players focused on performance improvement.”
