ROSS Golf Club's men's seniors 55 and over John Price Shield competition was well supported with no less than 58 pairs taking part, reports Keith Ray.
When Colin Price was elected Ross Seniors Captain for the 2019/20 year he was granted the opportunity to introduce a new annual trophy event to be played for each year by the men's seniors section members.
This was to rightly commemorate the playing days that his late father John enjoyed at the Gorsley-based tree-lined golf course, where John was a real character and is still remembered today with considerable fondness.
And the better-ball pairs stableford found both John Hall and Mark Ashton in great form, with their outstanding 49 points score proving unbeatable and their nearest rivals three points adrift of what was considered the highest total in the history of the competition.
Both John and Mark joined the Ross Club just a few years ago and their dedicated commitment to improving themselves since then was clearly in evidence.
John, now an 8 handicapper, started his playing days on 20 while Mark, now 18.9, was a 31-handicap starter.
In fact, Mark's first event at the club playing with his wife Ros in the 2022 annual President’s Prize pairs resulted in them taking home the day's top honour thanks to their marvellous 48 points score.
Mark Whitmore and Steve Woods were unfortunate to find John and Mark in such dynamic form on the day, as their 46 points total is usually enough to be the Shield winners.
But Steve will feel personally fulfilled in having captured a brilliant five birdies on the day.
They were followed by Vince Fish and George Beattie with 45 points and Charles Reeve-Tucker and Robert Wheeler, and Kevin French and Andy Corbett, both with 44 points.
