Ross Golf Club’s Annual Layton Cup for its men seniors members consists of six rounds of 18 holes stableford golf played throughout the summer months. At the end the honours board trophy winner is decided by the highest points total scored from his three best rounds.

The first round of the 2017 competition attracted 103 members. They all had to cope with some windy conditions, and it was good to see a new name at the top of the final score-sheet when Roger Alford recorded an impressive 41 points total.

Having retired in 2016 and now able to give more time to improving his golfing performances it is clear that Roger is in good hands at the Ross Club’s tree-lined course at Gorsley.

The investment in a new putter, combined with lessons from the Ross Club’s putting specialist Oli Leett, and also the occasional tip during general play from his accomplished golfing pal, 10 handicapper Peter Bennett, all contributed. The improvements led to a one shot handicap reduction to 19 and indicated Roger’s timely arrival on the Ross seniors circuit.

Roger was followed by David Morgan, also with 41 points, with David not used to being a runner-up after winning two recent seniors winter competitions. However, on this occasion his failure to score on the 17th hole prevented him from achieving a hat-trick win, after a count-back review.

Good scoring was also achieved by Ian Caves and Peter Cliffe with 39 points each followed by John Palmer, Cecil Wheatstone, Bob Howells and Tony Malim with 38 points and David Williams, Barry Smith, Jeremy Picton-Tubervill, Colin Price and Jim Millar all carding 37 points scores.
